Ray Selna chosen Realtor of the Year

The recipient of this year’s Sedona/Verde Valley Association of Realtors was named at an awards banquet Dec. 8.

The "Realtor of the Year" award was presented to Ray Selna, Broker and owner of Realty World/Selna & Associates, in Cottonwood. Paul Vorachek, President of the Association of Realtors, said, "The Realtor of the year award is given to a member of the Association who is not only involved in Realtor issues but who stands out by their involvement in other community activities."

Currently, Selna serves as an officer in the Rotary; he serves on the Verde Valley Medical Center Board and was Chairman for the Realtor Association’s Issues and Mobilization Committee, which, in the last election, addressed the controversial Sierra Club’s Growth Management Initiative. He helped found the Cottonwood chapter of the Boy’s and Girl’s Club. He is also one of eight Catholic Church committee members whose purpose is to establish a site at 89A and Bill Grey Road for a new Catholic Church in Cottonwood.

Born in Cottonwood, Selna graduated from Northern Arizona University in 1979 with an accounting degree. His family was already actively involved in real estate in the Verde Valley.

Opportunities to build a life in his hometown pointed directly to the family business. He acquired a license to sell real estate in 1979. In 1982 Selna obtained a Broker’s license and opened the doors of Mingus Shadows Realty, which in 1985, was renamed Realty World/Selna & Associates.

Selna, who was named Realtor of the Year one other time in 1994 said, "I had no idea I would be considered for Realtor of the Year for 2000. My father set an example of helping others that formed my views of the importance of involvement in my community. This is an award that is not something you consciously try to obtain, it is not a popularity contest, it is pure peer selection. Today’s Realtor is a highly trained professional who must adhere to a very strict code of ethics and who represents their clients in a legal minefield. I have a great deal of respect for my fellow Realtors and that makes this recognition very humbling."

As Realtor of the Year, Selna recommends to anyone: "Keep an active role in the community. Whether you are elected, appointed or a volunteer, contribute whenever possible. It benefits us all."
