Timeline for domestic violence

The domestic violence crime that left a Cottonwood area woman bruised and battered was not just a chance occurrence.

A series of events – gathered from Yavapai County Sheriff's Office and Cottonwood Police Department reports -- led up to the incidents of Tuesday afternoon.

They include:

Oct. 9: Christine Howieson calls the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office advising them that he is in violation of a court order of protection. When YCSO deputies arrive, they find Christine Howieson does not have a court order and she is advised that nothing can be done without that order She agrees to file the order. James Howieson is arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant. Christine Howieson files the request for the order of protection later that day.

Oct. 10: James Howieson is served the order of protection.

Oct. 18: Cottonwood police report to the offices of Mountain Stucco, 529 S. Main St., where Christine Howieson is an employee. A box addressed to her in her husband's handwriting was left at the building in violation of the order of protection. The package contained toys and Halloween items.

Oct. 19: James Howieson was detained by a YCSO deputy at a Cottonwood area residence. A citation was issued citing him for violating the order of protection. The citation was written and later cancelled as the deputy felt James Howieson had not violated the order. Cottonwood police later arrived on the scene and overruled the deputy's decision and took James Howieson into custody. He was later transported to the Yavapai County Jail.

Oct. 25: Cottonwood police notify the Yavapai County Attorney's office that James Howieson apparently threatened to kill his wife and himself when he was released from jail.

Oct. 29: Not knowing of the alleged threats made by James Howieson against his wife, Magistrate Joe Butner releases James Howieson on his own recognizance. Christine Howieson does not spend the night in her home.

Oct. 30: Christine Howieson, fearing for her safety, asks the YCSO to escort her to her home to pick up some personal items at about 8:15 a.m. She goes to work, leaving her keys in the door to quickly lock it should her husband visit her at work. Shortly before 4 p.m., James Howieson does visit her office and reportedly assaults her, causing damage to the office and numerous injuries to Christine Howieson. James Howieson is arrested, taken to Verde Valley Medical Center for apparent self-inflicted wrist wounds. Christine Howieson is treated and released at Verde Valley Medical Center for traumatic facial injuries.

Oct. 31: James Howieson again appears before Judge Butner. Bond is set at $1 million and he is charged with attempted first-degree murder per domestic violence, aggravated assault, stalking, burglary, aggravated harassment and criminal damage.
