It came down to the last shot, and the ball rimmed out for Mingus Union.
The Lady Marauders varsity basketball team lost a 41-39 decision at Sedona Red Rock on Monday night. Despite a 19-point, seven-rebound effort by senior Marie Fredlake, Mingus dropped to 0-2 on the season.
Sedona begins the Mary Schnack coaching era on a victorious note.
"The game came down to the final shot, and we got a good one," said Mingus coach Pete Fredlake. "Unfortunately, it didn't fall. We're still learning the basics, and we are making progress. The girls just need to keep positive and keep working."
The game proved nip-and-tuck throughout. Mingus took an 8-4 lead after the first quarter and held a 19-16 edge at halftime. Sedona pulled back to within 1 point after three periods and won the fourth quarter 13-10.
Holly Pickard paced the Scorpions with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals. Danielle Loparco added 8 points, and Jessica Denison pulled down eight boards.
Most of Fredlake's points came from the foul line. She finished 11-of-14 from the stripe. Fredlake also had four steals and two assists.
Watkins made five of her six shot attempts and dropped in two free throws. The senior also had five steals, two rebounds and two assists. Other Mingus scorers included Anna Groseta 4, Blake McDaniel 2 and Camille Boothe 2. Jenna Welter swiped five steals. Groseta had six rebounds.
The Marauders will travel to McClintock tonight (Wednesday). Sedona Red Rock will compete in a tournament at River Valley this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
