Alexander Lineberry, 11, of Cornville, won the Arizona State Boys 12-and-under doubles championship over the weekend at the Gene Autry Tennis Complex in Mesa.
He also placed fourth in 12-and-under singles.
Lineberry teamed with Jeremy Shapiro (12) of Scottsdale to defeat Jason Huo of Tucson and James Carr of Tempe 8-2 in the doubles final.
In the singles event, Lineberry, who was seeded sixth, defeated Kyle Ogren of Chandler 3-6, 6-3 and 7-6(7) in the first round and fifth seed Nolan Bauer of Phoenix in the quarter finals 7-5 and 7-5.
He lost in semifinals to the second seed, Wade Heerboth of Tucson, 7-6 (5), 6-4 and 7-6 (8) in the longest and closest match of the tournament. He lost the consolation final to Daniel Hyman of Tucson 7-6 (7) and 6-3.
“Alexander played a terrific match against Wade. He was two points from a berth in the finals, and it was a match that could have gone either way," said coach/father Larry Lineberry.
"Every match was very difficult, and it was the best he has played so far in tournament play. The third-fourth place match was also very close but he just ran out of gas after playing his third tie-breaker in one day and two tough matches the day before plus doubles.
“However, fourth in singles and state doubles champion is a great weekend of tennis for anyone.”
