Porch Fire

Verde Valley Fire District was called to a porch fire Tuesday evening. Neighbors on Horten Lane in Cornville spotted the fire and used a garden hose to extinguish flames until fire crews arrived. The fire started on a deck and spread about 15 feet. Fire investigators believe the fire may have been started by smoking material that was improperly discarded.

Three hospitalized from Rimrock accident

Three people were transported to the hospital following a 6:30 p.m. collision. A truck and car were involved in an accident Tuesday night in front of Montezuma-Rimrock Fire station. The vehicle was attempting to turn into Barefoot's Market and collided with a pickup. The occupants were transported to the Verde Valley Medical Center.

Vehicles, not horses!

Coconino Forest officials believe that local residents are angry about the new restrictions of motorized vehicles that are part of decision in Verde River Comprehensive Management Plan. A newly installed horse gate and hitching post place was pulled down at two trailheads Wingfield Mesa and Cottonwood Trailheads off Forest Road 503, east of Verde River. The equipment is valued at $500.

Forest officials are expected to have more contacts with area residents to inform them about the need for the changes.

Pair charged with meth offenses

A Yavapai County Sheriff's Deputy observed a vehicle driving erratically Tuesday evening. He conducted a traffic stop in the southbound lane of Interstate 17 near Arizona 260. The driver was Charles Thomas Simpson, 30, of Prescott Valley, and his passenger was identified as Patrick James Zotika, 35, of Flagstaff. Simpson was driving on a suspended license, according to the officer and was wanted on a Coconino County arrest warrant.

A search of the vehicle allegedly produced several digital scales with meth residue, a brass container with residue, a large baggie with residue and a package of 50 plastic bindles. On the floorboards, the officer found a water bottle with a cloudy substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed about 1 pound. Zotika also carried a plastic bindle with a useable amount of methamphetamine and two metal containers with meth residue.

Both men were charged with possession of dangerous drugs, transportation/sales of dangerous drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia. In addition, Zotika has a charge of Promoting Prison Contraband and Simpson faces charges of driving on a suspended license and two Coconino County warrants for failure to appear.

Rollover severs hand

A woman's hand was severed in a rollover accident west of Sedona Thursday morning. The one car accident was reported near the Pine Shadows RV park east of the Dry Creek Bridge. The woman was taken by ambulance to Verde Valley Medical Center.
