DPS officer, motorist hospitalized after crash

DPS Commercial Inspection Officer Brady Bullard, 36, was scheduled to be released from John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix Friday after a chain reaction collision Thursday that could have been much worse.

Bullard was sitting in his agency-issued pickup completing paperwork from an inspection on an 18-wheel commercial vehicle. The truck driver from Fontana, Ca. was standing between his truck and the DPS pickup. Both were parked beneath the Arena Del Loma overpass on Interstate 17.

At 1:41 p.m. a PT Cruiser driven by Michelle Wells, 37, of Scottsdale, struck the pickup from the rear, launching it partially beneath the trailer of the commercial vehicle.

Bullard was extracted from his pickup by Camp Verde Fire rescue crews and flown to the North Phoenix hospital.

Wells was flown to Flagstaff Medical Center in serious condition.
