Each winner also receives an official BEAST award certificate signed by Don Mattingly.

In accordance with the hitting philosophy of former MLB great Don Mattingly, the BEAST Award reflects not only great batting statistics, but the overall effort and attitude of the player. The award's name is derived from these characteristics:

Batting Average,

Slugging percentage,

Total on base percentage

"Don wanted to have an award that reflected his vision of batting performance and also rewarded a strong work ethic", says Skip Shaw, President of Mattingly Baseball.

Don co-founded Mattingly Baseball after designing a bat handle that helps hitters line up their "knocking knuckles" and put their hands into the proper batting grip, thereby improving their overall batting performance. The patented V-Grip is standard on a full line of wood, aluminum, and composite bats.
