Clearinghouse scam reported in Camp Verde

CAMP VERDE - A Camp Verde resident reported an attempted scam to the Marshal's Office this week. A caller claiming to be from Publishers Clearinghouse told the man he had won $5 million and a Mercedes.

Having not entered the sweepstakes, the man knew it was a fraud but stayed on the phone long enough to hear the whole spiel. He was told the prizes could be delivered by noon that day if he went to Western Union and wired the company $325 immediately.

The scammer called more than once to see if the man was going to wire the money.

The would-be victim, however, after informing the Marshal's Office, called back the scammer several minutes later and thanked him for depositing $5 million in his banking account.
