Sheriff investigates death in Oak Creek Canyon

OAK CREEK CANYON -- Coconino County Sheriff's deputies and detectives are investigating the death of a 30-year-old woman from California who was found in the bottom of Oak Creek Canyon late Friday afternoon.

About 5 p.m., the CCSO received the report that two hikers found the body of a woman in the canyon directly below Midgely Bridge. A Sheriff's deputy assigned to the Oak Creek Canyon and officers of the Sedona Police were dispatched to the area of the bridge. The deputy hiked to the bottom and confirmed the female had died.

Six team members of the CCSO's Search and Rescue and Technical Rescue teams were needed with a Stokes Basket to bring the body back up to the top of the canyon.

Family members have identified the victim as Joy Prats. The woman's family members reported her as a missing person to the Cottonwood Police about 7 a.m. on Friday. It is believed Ms. Prats made some suicidal comments and intentionally jumped from the bridge falling about 170 feet.
