A passion for youth ministry and a striving for multi-generational and diverse service to others are attributes the Rev. Matt Colby brings to Cottonwood's Mountain View United Methodist church.

He was appointed July 1 as senior pastor of the church that is now in its second century of faith in the Verde Valley. The appointment was made by Bishop Minerva Carcaño, resident bishop of the Phoenix Area, Desert Southwest Conference of the United Methodist Church.

The church's former pastor, the Rev. Laura O'Neil, has been appointed as pastor of the Pioneer United Methodist Fellowship at New River/Anthem.

The son of a United Methodist pastor, the Rev. Colby has 23 years of ordained ministry, having served United Methodist church at Paradise Valley UMC, First Tempe UMC and Vista de la Montana UMC, where was associate pastor of the church located north of Tucson.

A native of California, he attended public schools in Arizona. His undergraduate work was at San Diego State University. His master of divinity degree is from the Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University at Dallas, Texas.

He and his wife, Cathy - an Arizona native - have two children, Andrew, 12 years old, and Christiana, 6 years old. She works in marriage and family counseling.

His wife has a broad background in church music and hymns. "Cathy is not only my wife, but she is my wonderful partner in ministry," he said.

The Rev. Colby said he "looks forward to growing in relationship not only with the people of Mountain View, but with the community has a whole. Let's see where God guides us together in the next chapter of Mountain View United Methodist."

The church - located at 901 S. 12th Street - has Sunday worship services at 9 and 11 a.m.
