School board seats to be decided in 2012 election

VERDE VALLEY - Persons interested in running for local school boards in the Verde Valley and Sedona have until Aug. 8 to file paperwork and return signed petitions.

Some candidates have taken out packets and filed paperwork for election committees. According to the Yavapai County School Superintendent's Office, as of Friday, May 18, the following people have taken out information packets, but no one has filed petitions.

Beaver Creek Elementary has three seats open. Gereld Hardy, an incumbent, has taken out a packet, as well as two challengers, Jeannette Estes and Diana Foltz.

Camp Verde has three vacant seats up for election. Two incumbents, Helen Freeman and Tim Roth have taken out packets.

Clarkdale-Jerome School has two open seats up for election. No one has taken out election packets.

Cottonwood-Oak Creek District will have three board seats open for the November election. So far, incumbent Mary Valenzuela is the only candidate who has taken out a packet.

Mingus Union High School District will have three open seats, and no candidates have taken out election packets.

Sedona-Oak Creek District has three board seats open with no packets taken out.

Valley Academy for Career Technology Education District will have two seats up for election. Charlene Day is the only candidate to take out a packet.

Yavapai College will have two seats on the Board of Governors open for election. Robert Oliphant has taken out an election packet.

The recently completed re-districting by the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors also impacts the governing board seats of Yavapai College. All five board seats will expire Dec. 31, or because of the effect of redistricting become vacant as a matter of law on Jan. 1.

The six-year terms for District 1 and District 3 seats expire Dec. 31, and those seats will be up for election on Nov. 6. Those elected to represent Districts 1 and 3 will serve six-year terms, beginning Jan. 1 and expiring Dec. 31, 2018.

Yavapai County School Superintendent Tim Carter will appoint current Yavapai College Board members who were duly elected by the voters and whose terms are being impacted through no fault or action on their part to fill the vacant unexpired terms of new districts.

New District 1 - this seat is up for election Nov. 6 for a six-year term. Ray Sigafoos, who currently serves on the board and resides within this district, has indicated he will run for election in this district.

New District 2 - Herald Harrington currently serves on the board and resides within this district and will be appointed for a period of approximately two years until De. 331, 2014.

New District 3 - This seat is up for election Nov. 6 for a six-year term.

New District 4 - Dr. Patricia McCarver currently serves on the board and resides within this district. She will be appointed to the remaining unexpired term until Dec. 31, 2014.

New District 5 - Dale Fitzner currently serves on the board and resides within the district. He will be appointed to the remaining unexpired term until Dec. 31, 2014.
