Mary Ernestine Escalante, born June 12, 1928 in Glendale, AZ, died October 6, 2012 in Cottonwood, AZ.
Erni, as she liked to be called, was a lifelong resident of the Verde Valley, spending part of her childhood and teen years on a ranch in Middle Verde. Erni also worked over 20 years for the National Park Service serving in five national parks, starting at Tuzigoot and retiring from Grand Canyon from a supervisor position. She also was an avid gardener and was well known for her extensive iris gardens.
Erni was the widow of Edward G. Escalante, a WWII Veteran, who preceded her in death on November 11, 2011. Erni is survived by her two sons, Edward and his wife Barbara Escalante and Thomas and his wife Cheryl Escalante.
She is also survived by 11 siblings, 5 surviving grandchildren, (2 grandsons preceded her in death.) Erni also leaves 3 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter.
Erni will forever be remembered by her devoted family members and numerous friends who had the honor to be touched by her kind generosity and ferocity for life.
Services will be held for Erni on Friday October 12, 2012, 11 a.m., at Evangel Worship Center Foursquare, 1380 E. Mingus Ave., Cottonwood.
