Sandy Hook has certainly ignited a firestorm of attacks on our unique and valued Second Amendment rights as lawful citizens in a "still free" society to own and bear firearms. I commend the teachers and facility that used to the best of their ability with what they had, to hide and protect those beautiful children that tragic day. Many ultimately gave their lives shielding those children from that crazed mad man as he went through the school firing at "targets of opportunity." Absolutely incredible to try to wrap your head around that day's events.
Now we have the usual anti-gun opponents telling us law abiding citizens of this "still free" society that we again need to "ban assault rifles" and "high capacity magazines." First off, how about these anti-gun politicians having their personal security detail give up their high capacity weapons first? They all carry Glocks or similar semi auto pistols with high capacity magazines (10 + rounds) and many carry sub machine guns! Fully automatic high capacity firepower in a pistol round like Uzi's, MP-5's and other similar "assault weapons". What utter and total hypocrisy!
What makes them more important than my children or family? What about the Police? Are they going to limit their firepower too? If not, why are they going to be able to protect themselves better than me? They are not there to protect me when I have to make a bank deposit or drive through downtown Phoenix. The Police have a tough enough job as it is.
Now my final point is all this will accomplish is pushing it underground like prohibition did with alcohol in the '20s. That was a lesson in futility and in itself gave organized crime a huge foothold in this country. How are they going to enforce this? Nazi-like Brown Shirts going door to door? How are they going to fund this? These self-serving elitists haven't been able to pass a budget in years! But that's a topic for another letter.
If you own or are thinking of getting a firearm, good for you! Please learn to use it responsibly, safely and accurately. Practice frequently, and if you shoot on Forest land, please pick up your trash! It makes us responsible gun owners look bad.
