PRESCOTT – To borrow a little baseball lingo, five Camp Verde wrestlers pitched shutouts at the Nov. 26 Yavapai County Duals at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott.
Though wrestling is an individual sport, Camp Verde’s team of grapplers finished third in the tournament.
“The 10 wrestlers we took, those are the finest kids we have,” said Camp Verde head coach Tracy Tudor. “They make their grades, they make their weight, they do what they’re supposed to do. They’re studs. And I expect it of them.”
According to Tudor, how well his team does this year will depend on whether his wrestlers can consistently make their weights, as well as their grades.
“All of the kids, they put out gallant efforts,” Tudor said. “Some just came out on the short end, but I’m very proud of them. They’re good kids.”
Finishing undefeated for Camp Verde were freshman 106-pounder Keene Todacheene, junior 115-pounder Skyler Pike, senior 120-pounder West Phillips, freshman 126-pounder Korben Uhler and senior 138-pounder Hayden Uhler.
Senior 170-pounder Jose Guzman finished 3-1 in the tournament.
Though Camp Verde finished third in Prescott, Tudor said that the team’s four forfeits kept the team from a better finish.
“It’s holding us back, [not] fielding a whole team, [being] undermanned,” Tudor said. “But we have quality. We can win. It’s a little tougher. [But] we’ll do very well.”
Going into the Dec. 2-3 Verde Duals at home in Camp Verde, Tudor said he looks forward to his team’s continued development.
“Some stud teams are coming up,” Tudor said. Very tough programs, one of the most challenging, the Verde Duals competition”
Other high schools scheduled to participate in the Verde Duals include River Valley, Antelope, Bradshaw Mountain, Window Rock, Verrado, Benson, Tuba City, Chandler Prep, Kofa, Casteel, San Pasqual, Ironwood Ridge, Santa Cruz, San Manuel and North Canyon.
“They’re going to be very tough,” Tudor said. “For the guys to go in, win or lose and give it everything they’ve got, success to me is giving it 100 percent to the very end. That’s what I saw last weekend [at Embry-Riddle]. That’s what I want to see this weekend.”
