Cyber Cowboys compete in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF – On Saturday, Dec. 3, the Cyber Cowboys Robotics Team of Camp Verde Elementary School participated in the First Lego League’s Animal Allies Robotics Competition in Flagstaff.

According to Peggy Dickey, the school’s Robotics Coach and Instructor, the team comprised of both fourth graders and fifth graders “fared well and put their engineering skills to work.”

The Cyber Cowboys team competed against teams of middle school-aged students.

“We are proud of their performance and work ethic this season and look forward to Battle of the Bots coming up late February,” Dickey said. “We reflect upon how fortunate we are to have a supportive business community that makes this program possible for our young engineers.”

The First Lego League competition is one of several robotics programs at Camp Verde Elementary School. Other programs are beginning, intermediate and advanced robotics, Concoct Your Own Creation, Master the Missions, as well as Battle of the Bots.

“Growing a new crop of engineers,” Dickey says her goal is to “inspire a passion for S.T.E.M. that may lead these students to a successful engineering or technology careers in the future.”

New Verde Lakes pickup, delivery for AHA students

CAMP VERDE – Beginning Jan. 4, American Heritage Academy will add a bus pickup location to Verde Lakes to accommodate students who live in the town’s east stretches.

At approximately 7:35 a.m., American Heritage Academy’s school bus will pick up students at the intersection of E. Preserve Drive and E. Verde Lakes Drive.

AHA Principal Lance Barnes says for guardians to have their students at the pickup point “at least five minutes early.”

The school’s Verde Lakes residents will be the first taken home, and will arrive back at the intersection of E. Preserve Drive and E. Verde Lakes Drive at approximately 3:30 p.m.

“Although we would love to travel farther into Verde Lakes, we simply don’t have the time to do so and still get students to school on time,” Barnes said. “We also want those Verde Lakes students to still have an opportunity to eat breakfast here at the school at approximately 7:45 a.m.

Anyone who plans to use American Heritage’s new Verde Lakes pickup and drop-off location should call American Heritage Academy at 928-567-0462 and ask for either Alison Sandall or Lance Barnes. Both rider and parent will need to have signed a bus behavior contract before starting to use the bus service, according to Barnes.

Camp Verde Chamber sponsors minimum wage, paid sick leave law talk

CAMP VERDE – At 11 a.m. Dec. 19 at the Camp Verde Community Library, the Camp Verde Chamber of Commerce will host a presentation on the new Arizona Minimum Wage and Paid Sick Leave law.

Says Steve Goetting of the Camp Verde Chamber of Commerce, the new law in general “will hurt as much as it helps.”

“The new law is an attempt at a simple fix,” Goetting says. “But the issues of livable wages and income inequity are complicated.

“For those business who are looking at significant wage increases, they will either figure out how to get more value from their employees or try raising prices. Some will and have gone out of business.”

Goetting says that rather than raising the minimum wage, the “standard of living for our workers” should be increased.

“It takes things like education, training, adequate and affordable housing, and accessible health care,” Goetting says. “These are complicated solutions, but these are what ultimately makes a difference in the ability to earn a living to feed oneself and a family.”

Dr. Alexandria Wright, Regional Economic Development Center Director at Yavapai College, will lead the presentation in the library’s Copper Room.

The meeting is open to the public.
