COTTONWOOD – Verde Valley Fire District responded to a residential fire around 1 a.m. Tuesday and were on scene for approximately two hours at the 5600 block of East River Run Drive, according to Fire Chief Nazih Hazime.

The structure was housing many cats that were being cared for by the property owner, according to the release. The cats did not survive, and the fire is still under investigation, said Chief Hazime.

The press release from the district said that upon arrival, the crew found a 50 percent involved small structure fire. Crews went into an offensive fire attack mode until the conditions become too dangerous, and transitioned to defensive mode, said Chief Hazime.

The release stated that crews had an extensive overhaul as the structure also had a loft with heavy storage.

Verde Valley Fire District was assisted by Cottonwood Fire Department, Verde Valley Ambulance, APS, and YCSO.
