Mingus Union football’s record dropped to 0-3 as they lost 42-25 at Glendale Cactus on Friday night.

The Cobras jumped out to a 20-6 lead after one quarter but the Marauders stormed back. Mingus Union rallied to make it 20-19 but missed the extra point.

Cactus then went up 28-19 but Mingus Union scored to pull to within three points. However, after the Marauders’ two-point conversion failed, the Cobras went on a 14-0 in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Cactus (3-0) was down to its third string quarterback.

Last season Mingus Union beat the Cobras 35-28 in Cottonwood.

Cactus improved to 2-0 against the Grand Canyon Region as they had beaten Bradshaw Mountain 61-23. Their next game is against Cave Creek Cactus Shadows, who beat Mingus Union 21-20 in week two.

The loss was the Marauders’ fifth in a row dating back to last season.

Up next for Mingus Union is Lee Williams (3-0) on Friday at 7 p.m. to open region play. Last year the Marauders went 5-1 in Grand Canyon games.

Mingus Union’s next six games are Grand Canyon Region games. They close out the regular season with Peoria Sunrise Mountain at home on Oct. 27.

Flagstaff (3-0, 1-0 Grand Canyon) sits in first in the region. Lee Williams is second but only has a 1-0 conference record, having beaten 2A Kingman Academy by a point and 3A Kingman.

Cactus is in first in the West Valley Region. Mingus Union’s two foes so far this year, Gilbert Higley (Desert Sky) and Cactus Shadows (Skyline) are in second in their region.

Prescott is 2-1, Mohave 1-2, Coconino 1-2 and Bradshaw Mountain 0-3.

The first rankings come out on Sept. 26, so the Marauders have a couple games to improve their standing.
