In 1891, Cosmos Mindeleff (left) surveyed over 50 archaeological sites along the Verde River from its confluence with the Salt River to Beaver Creek, including the cluster of cavates located eight miles south of Camp Verde that now bear his name. A meticulous observer and skilled surveyor, Cosmos Mindeleff drew a floor plan that is as accurate today as it was then. Mindeleff and his brother Victor surveyed dozens of ruins through out the southwest over a 15-year period. (Courtesy of Susan Hall)
