Northern Arizona Healthcare and the Board of Directors of Verde Valley Medical Center appointed Barbara S. Dember, M.H.A., F.A.C.H.E., as President and Chief Executive Officer of Verde Valley Medical Center.
After more than eight months in the interim position, Dember's deep commitment to the health of the community, passion for patient safety and service, along with her financial acumen and strategic vision, demonstrated she is poised to take the hospital and its outpatient services successfully into the future.
"Barb displayed great leadership skills during her time as interim president and CEO," VVMC Board of Directors Chairman Richard Cranmer said. "She successfully handled a challenging budget process and made difficult restructuring decisions to ensure VVMC is poised for the future. We feel fortunate to have someone of her caliber to lead VVMC."
Dember stepped up to fully embrace the president and CEO role engaging in community and employee outreach to gauge the pulse of both populations. She displays a true commitment to the patient and doing what is right for employees and the people VVMC cares for on a daily basis.
"It's a privilege to be selected to lead our team at Verde Valley Medical Center as we strive to build and improve healthcare in our community," Dember said. "I feel honored to have the opportunity to be at the forefront as VVMC navigates uncharted territory, brought about by major shifts within the healthcare industry. We are already embracing these changes and engaging our community to make this their healthcare system."
With more than 20 years of executive level experience, Dember brings extensive experience in healthcare management to her new role. She came to VVMC in 2009 as the Vice President of Professional Services and Medical Group Operations. She spent one year at Flagstaff Medical Center as Vice President of Professional Services before moving to VVMC.
Before joining Northern Arizona Healthcare, she worked with PeaceHealth, a 10-hospital system in the Pacific Northwest in various leadership roles including senior vice president for Clinical Institutes, regional vice president of Strategy and Business Development, system vice-president of Joint Ventures, Mergers, and Acquisitions, vice-president of Hospital and Medical Group Operations, executive director of Managed Care and Whatcom Integrated Delivery System, including insurance operations at SelectCare of Washington.
Dember is an Arizona native, born and raised in Tucson. She received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Accounting) from the University of Arizona in 1983 and her Master of Science in Healthcare Administration from California College of Health Sciences in San Diego, 2005. She is a Lean Six-Sigma Green Belt and a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dember lives in the Verde Valley with her husband of 32 years, Barry Dember, and their golden retriever Teddy.
